Former U.S. Senator Is Entering the Marijuana Industry

Well this might be a first.

Former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel (D-Alaska) has entered the marijuana industry. Gravel is the new CEO of called KUSH (no, that’s not a typo), which is a company that produces marijuana-infused edible products for medical and recreational use and is a subsidiary of Cannabis Sativa, Inc. Former New Mexico Gov. and Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson is the CEO of Cannabis Sativa.

“I’m anxious to assist in bringing this important resource to a broader market in a serious and credible way,” Gravel said in a statement.

Gravel, who served in the Senate from 1969 to 1981 and ran for president in 2008, has been a vocal critic of the War on Drugs since its launch under President Richard Nixon. He is also famous for defying Nixon by releasing the Pentagon Papers into the congressional record, and more recently urged Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colorado) to make the CIA torture report public by reading it on the Senate floor.

“Senator Gravel stood up to Nixon, stood up to the Pentagon, and now he is standing up to those in power who would keep the healthful benefits of cannabis from those who need them,” Steve Kubby, the chairman of Cannabis Sativa’s board, said in a statement. “He’s a true American hero and we’re excited to have him serving in this capacity.”
