Germany Suspects Terrorist Attack Imminent, Beefs Up Security
“We have concrete indications of a series of attacks planned for the end of November,” said German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, warning of a terrorist attack on par with that of Mumbi. The country is preparing for such an event, beefing up security and taking extra precautions. “What we are basically preparing ourselves for,” he said, “is that terrorists coming from abroad [will] commit an attack soon after arrival.”
He added that while there’s “reason for concern, there’s “no reason for hysteria.” As reported by CNN, Maiziere states that,
“Security authorities are considering three different threat scenarios by international terrorists. Security authorities have been pursuing these indications for weeks with the highest intensity and proper sensitivity—in closest cooperation with our international partners.
“Now further insights and facts relevant to danger have added themselves to these established insights” and spurred a hike in the country’s threat level because of what is termed a “new situation.” The level is now the same as it was during Germany’s September 2009 federal elections.
Security has been considerably tightened, and will remain so until at least the end of November, in order to prevent what Maiziere called “something similar to what happened in Mumbai.”
