Gov. Christie: GOP Has to Win Governors Races to Control ‘Voting Mechanisms’
New Jersey Governor and head of the Republican Governors Association Chris Christie said Wednesday that the GOP needed to win governors races to control “voting mechanisms” within states.
“Would you rather have Rick Scott in Florida overseeing the voting mechanism, or Charlie Crist?” he said. “Would you rather have Scott Walker in Wisconsin overseeing the voting mechanism, or would you rather have Mary Burke? Who would you rather have in Ohio, John Kasich or Ed FitzGerald?”
The GOP is facing surprisingly strong opponents in governors races, while it has multiple voter ID bills being challenged in the courts. Republicans say the bills are necessary to curtail voter fraud, though they’ve struggled to find actual instances of it, while Democrats say the bills are blatant attempts to disenfranchise minority voters.
Control of state legislatures also gives the GOP control of decennial redistricting process, which it has used in the past to gerrymander districts into safe Republican seats.
