Green Party Presidential Candidate Slams Syria Strike, Citing Martin Luther King

Following President Donald Trump‘s decision to launch 59 tomahawk missiles on a military airfield in Syria Thursday night, few national politicians offered total objection. Democratic members of Congress generally expressed their wish that Trump had sought Congressional approval for his military action.
But 2016 Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein came out strongly against the launch. In a tweet posted to her account Thursday night, Stein quoted Dr. Martin Luther King while denouncing what she called an “insane cycle of endless war.”
If we want peace at home we need peace abroad. We must stop this insane cycle of endless war. #NoWarWithSyria pic.twitter.com/bL4cyyNGbH

Stein’s running mate, Ajamu Baraka, offered a similar condemnation of the strike — also referencing Dr. King:
Two days after 50th anniversary of King’s anti war speech war drums are beating again. U.S. has no moral right to wage war on Syria.

Stein campaigned on a platform of a drastically reduced American military. She advocated for a at least a 50 percent cut in the military budget, and called for the closure of more than 700 foreign military bases — arguing that they “are turning our republic into a bankrupt empire.”
