Greenwald Wins Journalism Award Named for Hugh Hefner

This week Glenn Greenwald received the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award and…

Wait, sorry, let me back up a second.

There is such a thing as the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award. Yes, this is an actual journalism award named after Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, and this week it was bestowed upon Greenwald for his in-depth reporting on the NSA.

Previous winners of Hefner awards have been NSA whistleblower Thomas Drake, ACLU executive director Anthony Romero, and the co-founders of the group Freedom of the Press Foundation.

In his video response to receiving the award, Greenwald said his politically conservative father has generally supported his work with some ambivalence, but “receiving an award named after Hugh Hefner would be the first time that he really felt unqualified enthusiasm about the work I was doing.”
