Harry Reid Apologizes for Asian Jokes: ‘My Comments Were in Extremely Poor Taste’

Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) apologized quickly this morning after video of him cracking some Asian-themed jokes went viral.

“My comments were in extremely poor taste and I apologize,” he told The Hill. “Sometimes I say the wrong thing.”

The jokes he made to the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce included comments about how many Wongs there are (“One problem that I’ve had today is keeping my Wongs straight”), as well as how Asians have deceived the world into thinking that they are intelligent.

This isn’t the first time that Reid has made questionable comments about race: back in 2008, he privately made comments that then-candidate Barack Obama would be successful, thanks to his “light-skinned appearance and speaking patterns with no negro dialect.”
