Here’s Your Twitter Roundup of Reactions to Trump’s ‘Second Amendment’ Proclamation
If anything has ever deserved a Twitter roundup, it’s what happened today. In case you somehow missed it, Donald Trump said something odd and vague about Hillary Clinton and “Second Amendment people.” Here is what people are surmising.
First, the most common theory is that he was joking about someone shooting Clinton:
“Look, shooting Hillary Clinton isn’t the same as killing her. Like, someone could shoot to maim!” – Some Trump surrogate on cable later

just another day of “jokes” about murder from the Republican nominee

— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) August 9, 2016
Y’all. Y’ALL. A British MP was murdered in the lead up to Brexit. This is not something to take lightly.

Just called @SecretService re: “2nd Amendment people”:
“We’re familiar with the comment,” not yet prepared to make statement.

Others didn’t question that he called for violence, but wondered if the target was really Clinton:
It’s unclear from that clip whether Trump was calling on his supporters to kill Hillary Clinton or to kill liberal Supreme Court justices.

@philipaklein Amazing that this is the softer reading of the quote.

Clinton’s team put out a statement…
— Emily Cahn (@CahnEmily) August 9, 2016
…as did Trump’s:
Called that one: Trump statement blames media, doesn’t clarify or walk back 2A comment… pic.twitter.com/htzdnGXFJq

The reaction to the statement from Trump’s campaign, which claimed he was calling on 2A supporters to vote, was swift:
What Trump said was premised on Clinton having been elected — “if she gets to pick her judges….” Is this really all they’ve got?

Does Trump realize we saw the video? He said “If she gets to pick Supreme Court justices…” VOTING or whatever his excuse was doesn’t apply
