Hillary Clinton Takes Heat For Backing Andrew Cuomo For NY Governor Over Female Challenger

“There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.”

That was the message from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in 2016 as she campaigned for former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Albright’s comments echoed many of Clinton’s own statements on the campaign trail, which focused on Clinton potentially becoming the first female president.

Apparently, though, women should only vote for women if that candidate’s last name is Clinton.

The New York Times reported Monday that Clinton will endorse incumbent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo over Cynthia Nixon, who would be not only New York’s first female governor but also the Empire State’s first openly LGBT governor.

This rich piece of irony was not lost on many of Clinton’s critics, who took to Twitter to point out the former Democratic presidential nominee’s perceived hypocrisy.

“Hillary must be endorsing Cuomo because her husband is telling her to,” conservative columnist Stephen Miller wrote, mocking Clinton’s criticisms of women who voted for Trump.

“Democrat Cynthia Nixon has the chance to become New York’s first female Governor, and its first openly LGBT Governor,” journalist Glenn Greenwald wrote. “That’s exciting! But Hillary Clinton just endorsed her white, straight, male, corruption-tainted opponent.”

“Hope this doesn’t bode as poorly as it seems for Hillary Clinton’s prospects in the after life,” he quipped.

The Washington Free Beacon‘s Alex Griswold echoed that critique.

Greenwald later tweeted, “I personally believe Hillary Clinton  is endorsing Andrew Cuomo over Cynthia Nixon because Cuomo’s ideology & ways of doing politics is much closer to Clinton than Nixon’s – not because of homophobia within Clinton.”

“Maybe this presumption can also apply to other Dem primaries,” Greenwald added.

Journalist Emma Vigeland suggested that Clinton’s endorsement of Cuomo is something Nixon should use to her advantage, since Clinton’s approval rating in New York is “not THAT high.”

Paul Spencer, who is running as a Democrat for the U.S. House of Representatives in the Clintons’ home state of Arkansas, told the New York Times that he sees the former first lady, senator, and secretary of state not as an asset, but “as a liability.”

“They simply represent the old mindset of a Democratic Party that is going to continue to lose elections,” Spencer said, according to the Times.
