Hillary Scolds #BlackLivesMatter Hecklers: ‘I’m Going to Keep Talking’

It was only about a week ago when Hillary Clinton had her thorny conversation with #BlackLivesMatter. Clinton was accused of “victim-blaming” during the meeting, and couldn’t reach an agreement with the activists on a policy agenda to address the social challenges African Americans face.

Today, Clinton was heckled by two women of the movement while giving a campaign speech in Cleveland.

Just after after Clinton said “we do have to stand up and say loudly and clearly ‘black lives matter,” the activists started chanting the names of black transgender people who have been murdered recently. The women were reportedly also connected to with civil rights group GetEQUAL, and heckled Clinton to divest support for private prisons to black transgender support.

“Hillary Clinton must stand with Black people, especially Black trans women, by refusing to accept funds from or bundled by executives of or lobbyists for private prison companies—and investing the money she’s already accepted from those companies in the work toward Black trans liberation,” said organizer Rian Brown in a statement sent to Fusion. “Until that happens, we cannot for a moment think that Hillary believes Black Lives Matter.”

As the women chanted, Clinton responded, “I will certainly be happy to meet with you later, but I’m going to keep talking.”

It has yet to be seen whether this will mean a second round of discussions with the movement.
