House Votes to End Gov’t Shutdown, Raise Debt Ceiling

The House of Representatives just voted on the Senate deal to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling 285-144, approving it with the help of a significant chunk of Republicans. The vote was a forgone conclusion after Speaker John Boehner admitted in the afternoon that Republicans lost the fight they were waging.

Even Ted Cruz seemed to admit defeat today, though he did not give up without a fight, speaking on the Senate floor before that body voted for one final hurrah.

The compromise bill says the government will be reopened and stay funded until January 15th and the debt ceiling will be raised until February 7th, so if this fight being over disappoints you a little, don’t worry: it’ll happen again soon enough.
