J.D. Hayworth Believes Controversial Arizona Birther Bill “Too Narrow”

A recent bill in the Arizona state legislature is requiring future presidential candidates to show his or her birth certificate in order to be on the state’s ballot. The controversial bill was brought up to Arizona Senatorial candidate, and former conservative radio talk show host, J.D. Hayworth, who is challenging John McCain in what’s becoming a contentious primary. Hayworth’s take on the bill? It doesn’t go far enough.

It’s been a hot-button issue that many see as a symptom of a much greater divide between what some are calling the “Birther Movement” (those who believe President Obama is not a legal president because he wasn’t born in the U.S.) and others who feel like that’s a bunch of hooey. Hayworth lays the reasonable claim that we should ask no less of our candidates than we do of our voters (who must also prove that they are citizens before voting.) That said, it doesn’t take much to see that requiring a birth certificate for Presidential candidate plays right into the hands of those who believe Obama is an illegitimate president, a largely conservative voting bloc that is Hayworth’s base.
