Jimmy Fallon Responds to Critics: Trump Often ‘Just Too Serious’ To Joke About
Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon received a great deal of criticism for an interview with then-candidate Donald Trump in which he tousled the President’s hair. And on a nightly basis, the Saturday Night Live alum just has not made Trump jokes anywhere near as much a part of his repertoire as much as late-night peers Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers.
In a preview of an interview set to air this weekend on Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, Fallon responded to critics — saying that some of Trump’s actions are too sobering to joke about.
“[W]ith Trump, it’s just like every day’s a new thing,” Trump said. “He gives a lot of material. A lot of stuff is hard to even make a joke about. It’s just too serious.”
Earlier in the segment, the comedian said that, overall, he lacks interest in politics compared to pop culture. And to pretend otherwise would be a betrayal of who he is.
“It’s just not what I do,” Fallon said. “I think it would be weird for me to start doing it now. I don’t really even care that much about politics —- I’ve got to be honest.”
