John McCain: The GOP Primary Is ‘Like Watching A Greek Tragedy’

John McCain is a little worried about how the Republican primary race is turning out — particularly in terms of how the negative campaigning will affect the GOP nominee in the general election. The negativity, he told the Boston Herald, will not serve the party well against Obama in November.

McCain told the Herald:

“This is like watching a Greek tragedy … It’s the negative campaigning and the increasingly personal attacks … it should have stopped long ago. Any utility from the debates has been exhausted, and now it’s just exchanging cheap shots and personal shots followed by super PAC attacks.”

The former Republican presidential candidate is a Mitt Romney supporter, and said, “I know he’s going to be the nominee,” but “I also worry about how much damage has been done.”

More optimistically, McCain stated, “I think we still can win. … Once we get this over, the more we’ll be focused on Obama’s failures.”
