Layoffs Begin At the New York Times, The List Thus Far
Layoffs have finally arrived at the New York Times. After completing a round of buyouts last week, which totaled 74 (slightly more than was expected) the paper yesterday started laying off the remaining 26 people. Earlier this year executive editor Bill Keller said the paper was looking to shed 100 people. Here’s what the list looks like thus far as put together by New York and Gawker:
Eric Konigsberg — Culture
Sara Rimer — National
Christine Hauser — Metro
Josh Barbanel — Real Estate
Mitch Blumenthal — Continuous News
Kate Galbraith — Business
Allen Salkin — Styles
Monica Evanchik — Web
Gawker — Who was unable to confirm either list with the Times’ Diane McNulty
Ross M. Schneiderman – web producer (worked on Economix blog)
Jim Nelson Norman – biz copy desk
Three news assistants from the Editorial dept.
A couple of surprises on that list, primarily culture and Style writers Eric Konigsberg and Allen Salkin. One wonders if the Times is hoping the sort of popular features both Konigsberg and Salkin pen for the paper can be handled on a freelance basis, likely by the writers themselves.
