McCain Votes in Favor of Nuclear Option After Saying Supporters Were ‘Stupid Idiots’

Despite saying its supporters were “stupid idiots,” John McCain decided to join his fellow Senate Republicans by voting for the “nuclear option,” eliminating the filibuster and virtually ensuring Neil Gorsuch‘s confirmation to the Supreme Court.
Earlier this week, McCain raised eyebrows when he blasted those who suggested overruling the 60-vote SCOTUS nominee threshold. At the time, McCain said he was concerned about the precedent it would set for the Senate’s future.
McCain’s skepticism over deploying the nuclear option was echoed by Republican senators Susan Collins and Lindsey Graham, who also joined him in voting for the rules change.
