Meet 2016 Democratic Candidate and Hollywood ‘Filmmaker’ Jim Webb

jim webb colbert reportIf you’ve visited former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb‘s 2016 campaign website recently, you might have stumbled across this line in his personal biography:

Public Servant. Warrior. Author. Filmmaker.

“Public servant”? Well, yes — he was a state senator once, and before that, Webb served as the Asst. Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and the Secretary of the Navy. “Warrior”? A dated term, sure, but Webb graduated from the Naval Academy and served in the Marine Corps. during the Vietnam War. “Author”? Definitely, as the former senator has written and published several military-focused works of fiction and nonfiction.

But what about “film-maker”? Most of you were probably willing to grant the first three descriptors, but Hollywood? Maybe not, especially since Webb used the totally unnecessary hyphen in the term.

As Deadline reminds us, you’d be wrong, for Webb was — in fact — involved in the movie-making business for a time. His biggest credit comes with the 2000 film Rules of Engagement, which he developed with producer Scott Rudin. Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, the film was executive producer by Webb, who also received a story credit.

Webb served as executive producer for the 2003 documentary Prepared To Serve: The U.S. Naval Academy In The Vietnam Era, and his Whiskey River was recently optioned by Warner Bros.

So yeah. Webb actually is a “film-maker.”
