Meet the Florida Man Who Accidentally Texted a Narc Looking for Drugs
Things didn’t go so well for a Florida man seeking his next fix when he accidentally texted the narcotics captain of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
William Lamberson, 29, of Port St. Lucie thought he was reaching out to an acquaintance named “Will” that he had met at a 7-11. Instead, his texts were actually being sent to a cop — and not just any cop, but the captain of the MCSO’s narcotics detectives. Whoops:

Instead of ignoring the random messages, the MCSO drew out the conversation in order to set up a sting operation. Lamberson thought “a controlled cocaine transaction was underway,” according to an official statement, but it was actually an elaborate, thumbs-driven plan to arrest him. The plan succeeded, as Lamberson was arrested on Sept. 1.
On the one hand, it feels like Lamberson was unfairly pegged into a corner. Texting someone in the hopes of finding a score isn’t necessarily a crime.
Yet the Floridian makes it difficult to root for him since, according to the message exchange published in the MSCO’s statement, he was unable to detect the sudden change in the officer’s tone. No one with a basic grasp of the English language can go from “What’s up” and “I don’t know you. Send me a pic,” to “Lol. Whassup. Chillin here. You got any hooks for sum blow” without questioning reality.
