Missouri Governor Orders ‘Systematic Removal’ of National Guard from Ferguson
After a night of relative peace in Ferguson, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon (D) announced Thursday he would begin removing National Guard troops from the embattled town.
Nixon called in the Guard on Monday after tensions between protestors and law enforcement turned violent Sunday night. He stressed that the Guard would have a “limited” role in peacekeeping.
“Since that time,” he wrote in a statement, “the situation has greatly improved with fewer incidents of outside instigators and interfering with peaceful protestors, and fewer acts of violence.”
The Missouri Highway Patrol will continue to be present in the area. Read the statement below:
