Montana Democratic Party Mails Orange Jumpsuit to Greg Gianforte on his First Day in Congress

As Republican Greg Gianforte ran for a Montana congressional seat in June, he body-slammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs on the eve of the election — and still won.

The new congressman was sworn in on Wednesday, and received a congratulatory gift from the Montana Democrats in his new office on Capitol Hill: an orange jumpsuit.

Gianforte plead guilty to assaulting Jacobs, despite his campaign initially putting out a statement denying the allegations. He was charged with assault, and sentenced to community service and anger management. He also issued an extensive apology to Jacobs and agreed to donate $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

According to a snark-packed post on their website, the Montana Democrats sent “convicted criminal Greg Gianforte” a jumpsuit:

Everyone knows you need plenty of suits to work on Capitol Hill. While millionaire Gianforte can certainly afford his own, we know he has a lot of legal fees to pay. So, we thought we’d help him out and get him started by mailing a new suit to his office in the Longworth House Office Building in Washington. An orange jumpsuit, that is.

Roy Loewenstein, a spokesman for the Montana Democratic Party, writes that the jumpsuit for Gianforte is intended as “a welcome gift to help his new colleagues identify him.”
