New BP Oil Leak Video Shows Containment Dome Failure

Yesterday, BP released terrifying footage of the open oil well on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico spewing thousand of gallons of oil with nothing to stop it. Today, they’ve posted video online of their failed attempt to stop it, which shows oil overflowing out of the containment dome as they try to lower it. The video is of similar quality to the first, and one can clearly see the dome being lowered against the force of the open well.

The official problem with the containment dome was the formation of ice crystals on the inside, which make the dome buoyant. As the dome already has plenty of pressure on it from the force of the outpouring oil, any added force moving upwards derails the entire operation. In the video, you can see the oil pushing the containment dome upwards as workers try to fit it into place.
