New WaPo Poll Shows Support for Gay Marriage at Highest Level Ever
A new Washington Post/ABC poll finds support for same-sex marriage has flipped in the past ten years, and is now at its highest level in the poll’s history. “Support for same-sex marriage has changed more rapidly than almost any social issue in the past decade,” the Post reported.
The poll found 50% believe same-sex marriage is a constitutionally-protected right, as opposed to 41% who do not. Support for marriage itself is even higher, with 59% approving, the same number that disapproved in 2004; in states with constitutional bands against same-sex marriage, 53% approve. Support has gone up by ten percentage points just in the past two years.
Meanwhile, a whopping 81% feel that businesses should not be allowed to refuse service to members of the LGBT community, a number that goes down only slightly when asked if businesses should be allowed to claim a religious exemption. The finding is notable in the wake of Arizona’s SB 1062, which Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed last week amidst heavy criticism.
