Yesterday former President Bill Clinton observed we may be entering into a “period in politics that’s sort of fact free.” Also, if the latest poll numbers out of New York State are any guide, a period free of concern over a candidate in the habit of sending racist and pornographic emails who has zero political experience (the last bit is the least surprising part of this story).
This is all by way of saying that Carl Paladino, surprise GOP nominee for Governor of New York is only six points behind Andrew Cuomo. From WNYC:
In its first poll of likely general election voters, the Quinnipiac Poll found Republican nominee Carl Paladino narrowly trails Attorney General Andrew Cuomo 43-49 percent.
So what next? Andrew Cuomo insists that he intends to stick to the campaigning high road. Needless to say, every politician starts out saying that, however with just six weeks to go and poll numbers like these I think it’s fair to presume we can expect to see some devolving gutter talk on the front page of the New York Post fairly soon. Or perhaps even a 3am phone ad which features Paladino’s emails in lieu of the red ringing phone.
