At 2:33 PM Thursday, newsrooms across the country stopped what they were doing for a moment of silence honoring the five employees of the Capital Gazette newspaper who were slain last week.
At the Gazette, the Associated Press reports, editor Rick Hutzell rang a bell five times for the five people killed. Staff meetings are usually convened at the Gazette with a bell, giving the act added significance.
“Every time we ring that bell, we’re going to think about our friends,” Hutzell told AP.
The five people murdered last week include two editors, one reporter, one special publications editor and one sales assistant.

“Students will be traumatized by the loss and they’ll also be wondering about the issue of safety, which is something we haven’t had to deal with much in the U.S.,” Deborah Nelson,associate professor at the University of Maryland – from which two of the five victims earned their bachelor’s degrees – told AP.
