Parents of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin Appear at Florida Prayer Vigil
The Gospel Explosion Concert in Miami Gardens today held a vigil for Michael Brown that was attended by not just the parents of the slain Ferguson teen, but the parents of Trayvon Martin, whose son’s death also stirred a national conversation about race and the police.
The rapper Flo Rida hosted the annual event, which featured appearances by a number of famous artists. Flo Rida’s manager Freezy explained that one of the messages they want to get across to young people, especially in the wake of this week’s events in Ferguson, is “there is a better way than rioting and looting, and that kids need to put God in the mix.”
Both Brown’s and Martin’s parents were in attendance today and, according to CBS Miami, they spoke privately offstage together.
Martin’s parents joined Brown’s in a rally back in August against police violence. Days before, Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton wrote an open letter to Brown’s parents based on her own experiences.
