Paul Ryan Addresses House After Congressional Shooting: ‘An Attack on One of Us Is an Attack on All’
Following the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and four others at a Virginia baseball field this morning, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan addressed the House of Representatives
At the beginning of his remarks, Ryan wanted to express his thoughts and prayers for Scalise, the Capitol Hill police, and aides who were injured in the shooting today.
“We are all praying for those who were attacked and for their families,” the Republican leader noted. “Steve Scalise, Zachary Barth, Matt Mika, special agent David Bailey, special agent Krystal Griner — we are all giving our thoughts to those currently being treated for their injuries at this moment.”
He then pointed out that despite political differences within the chamber, the members were all united as one in the aftermath of a tragedy and attack on one of their own.
“We are united in our shock,” Ryan declared. “We are united in our anguish. And an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”
The speaker also wanted his colleagues to embrace a particular image from earlier in the day.
“But there is one image in particular that this house should keep,” he said. “And that is a photo I saw this morning of our Democratic colleagues gathered in prayer this morning after hearing the news.”
Ryan further pushed the call for unity in the wake of the shooting, pointing out that they do not shed their humanity when they enter the chamber and that underneath all the partisan bickering, they are “one family.”
