Phoenix Mayor Calls on Trump to Postpone Rally: I Hope ‘More Sound Judgment Prevails’

President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona next Tuesday. Besides this event coming on the heels of the president’s off-the-rails press conference where he blamed “both sides” for the violence in Charlottesville, it is rumored that the president is going to use the occasion to announce his pardon for controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
This evening, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton called on the president to reconsider and postpone the event, stating that he’s “disappointed” it’s been scheduled. He also noted that if Trump uses the rally to pardon Arpaio, it will be “clear the true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide the nation.”
“It is my hope that more sound judgment prevails and that he delays his visit,” Stanton wrote.

The mayor did point out that the city’s convention center was free to use for anyone who rents it and if the president insists on coming, he’ll make sure all the attendees and any protesters will be kept safe.
And it certainly seems like Trump intends to still hold the rally. Shortly after the mayor’s statement was released, POTUS sent out the following tweet:
