Police Chief Resigns over Facebook Posts About ‘Smelly,’ ‘Left-Wing’ Reporter
An Arkansas police chief got in trouble for Facebook posts in which he trashed a reporter as a “left-wing liberal” and “smelly.” Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin suspended him just days ago, and this week the chief, Mike Yates, tendered his resignation.
A reporter for The Jonesboro Sun resigned from the paper after receiving several negative comments about her work from Crump, including the following:
Pro-dope smoking, law license revoked, left wing liberal, smelly, arrested by police, unscrupulous reporter…
Dealing with ole Sunshine is like trying to pick up a dog turd by the ‘clean end.’
In response, Mayor Perrin ordered Yates to be suspended for 30 days and to complete a social media training course of some kind. However, it didn’t even get to that point, because on Monday, Yates resigned.
He wrote in his resignation letter that he allowed “anger and pride override” his better judgment, and regrets saying anything publicly negative about the reporter in question.
