Politician Apologizes for Heckling ‘Get Married!’ at Female Colleague

A Japanese assemblyman has apologized for heckling a female colleague last week as she was speaking on women’s issues like infertility and delaying marriage. According to the AP, Akihiro Suzuki admitted he was in the wrong when he shouted “You are the one who should get married first!” in the middle of Ayaka Shiomura‘s speech.

Reports said Suzuki also shouted “She must be single” and “Can’t you even have babies?” but he denies making those comments. He did, however, own up to the “get married” one and apologized.

His apology, however, did come with the clarification that yes, he believes it would be good for Shiomura to get married as soon as she can.

“I really hoped she could marry soon, bearing in mind this ongoing trend where women are delaying marriage and having fewer children. But there are people who cannot do so even if they want to, and I realize what I said lacked consideration.”

Suzuki said he personally reached out to Shiomura to apologize. However, he waited to issue any apology for five days, and Shiomura said that “it was a bit too late” for him to apologize.
