Poll: Americans Think Sony Overreacted
No wonder Sony eventually released The Interview, despite threats from hackers: a CNN/ORC poll revealed that Sony’s decision to cancel its premiere was wildly unpopular.
The hackers, known as the Guardians of Peace, had promised last week to attack movie theaters that screened the Seth Rogen/James Franco movie, prompting the major movie theaters to cancel their showings and forcing Sony to cancel the movie’s Christmas day premiere outright.
According to the poll, America did not think this was a good move: 62% of respondents thought Sony’s decision was an “overreaction” to the hackers’ threats of terrorism, while only 36% thought it was the “right decision.”
In addition, 61% considered the hack an act of terrorism, though 65% did not think that it was an act of war.
Facing the wrath of America and President Barack Obama, who publicly called Sony weenies for capitulating to a possible terrorist threat from North Korea, it’s no wonder Sony decided to let indie theaters screen the movie. #thanksobacco
