Putin Dominates Hockey Game, But It’s Not Like Other Team Let Him Win or Anything

Vladimir Putin’s hockey team The Festival Stars defeated its Sochi opponents 21-4 on Saturday, in large part thanks to Putin’s six goals and five assists, leading some to think that perhaps the other team wasn’t defending the Russian president as actively as they could have been.

Putin joined the game wearing a red #11 jersey, one of his many athletic exploits that have also included shirtless horseback riding and wrestling bears. The latter, of course, was likely a PR stunt, and the Wall Street Journal implied that his hockey game might have been, too, noting that glowing coverage of Putin’s score-fest directly followed news of violence in Ukraine.
