Report: More Mexicans Are Now Returning to Mexico Than Are Coming Into US

According to USA Today, a Pew Research Center report released on Thursday indicates that an estimated 870,000 Mexicans came to American between 2009 and 2014. Meanwhile, 1 million Mexicans left the U.S. for Mexico during the same time period, resulting in a net population loss of 130,000.

Mark Hugo Lopez, director of Hispanic research at Pew, told USA Today that this apparent shift was most likely due to the 2008 recession and the immediate financial consequences suffered by the Mexican and Mexican-American swathes of the population. In addition, Lopez cited increased border security and Mexico’s booming economy.

There’s also the matter of the current hot button topic of Syrian refugees, which resulted in Thursday’s passage of the Refugee Screening Bill, and the 2016 election cycle’s outspoken approach to immigration reform (courtesy of Donald Trump). USA Today ambiguously references both points as possible causes for the apparent shift in Mexican immigration.
