Roy Moore Calls on Mitch McConnell to Step Aside: ‘Drain the Swamp’

The walls are starting to close in on Alabama senate candidate Roy Moore. Several high profile Republican lawmakers have now urged the former judge to step out of the race, including Senators John McCain and Mitch McConnell.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell spoke to reporters today and said in no uncertain terms that Moore should step aside, stating that he “believed the women” who have accused the candidate of sexual misconduct with minors.

Moore, who has denied the allegations leveled against him, tried to turn the tables on Senator McConnell today, taking to Twitter to insist that he is the one who should step aside.

Moore took a page, whole cloth, from the playbook of President Donald Trump, suggesting that McConnell’s removal from office would “drain the swamp.”

“The person who should step aside is [Senator Mitch McConnell,]” he wrote. “He has failed conservatives and must be replaced.”

Other notable Republicans who have asked Moore to remove himself from the race include Mitt Romney, Gov. John Kasich and Senator Pat Toomey.

Moore will once again test the Republican establishment later today, when a new accuser is slated to step forward in a press conference with lawyer Gloria Allred. It has been reported that this new accuser will also say that Moore sexually assaulted her when she was underage.
