Sam Bee Breaks Down Ohio’s New Abortion Bills and the ‘Homophobic Crank’ Activist Repsonsible

It’s barely been five weeks since election day, and already the state of Ohio has signed into law two highly-controversial abortion laws that threaten the rights of women to choose. Senate Bill 127 would ban abortions past the 20 week period, while the so-called “Heartbeat Bill” — considered unconstitutional by just about every imaginable legal scholar — bans abortions past the point of a detectable heartbeat in the fetus (about the six week point of a pregnancy, often times before a woman even knows she’s pregnant).

The Buckeye State’s Heartbeat Bill is the strictest in the nation. “Six weeks? What the hell Ohio!” exclaimed Full Frontal host Samantha Bee Monday night. “Most women won’t even know they’re pregnant. Especially now, since every time we wake up and Trump is President, we all have morning sickness.”

Bee directed her frustration at “homophobic crank and whack-a-doodle about town Janet Porter,” the anti-abortion activist who spearheaded an effort to actually have a 15-week-old fetus “testify” in court by having a judge listen to its heartbeat during a live sonogram. As the Full Frontal host joked, “every Republican Senator came so hard they passed out” on election night after realizing that a Trump victory — and a GOP sweep across the board — meant a reinvigorated pathway to pushing for anti-abortion legislation.

“Overturning Roe [v. Wade] has always been the pro-lifers wet dream,” Sam Bee continued, and unfortunately for pro-choice supporters, that may be a reality in the not-too-distant future; the three oldest SCOTUS judges (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Anthony Kennedy, and Stephen Breyer) are all in the majority opinion on abortion cases.
