With Mika and Joe off for vacation, the cast of a Willie Geist led Morning Joe took a moment for some lighthearted mockery of New Jersey governor Chris Christie. The governor took an unfortunate turn in the spotlight (which to be increasingly routine for him) after being spotted on a state beach, closed as a result of a New Jersey government shutdown. Worse still, Christie previously suggested in a press conference that he had taken no R&R over the holiday.
“Bad optics for the moment yesterday on the beach for Governor Christie,” Geist deadpanned. “Island Beach State Park is where the governor has a beach residence. So he’s just on the beach right in front of that residence. When he was asked yesterday about why he should be on the beach and other’s weren’t he said ‘run for governor ,you get your own residence.'”
This provoked a round of laughter on set, with the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein leading the guffawing.
“He’s in the honey badger part of his administration. You don’t care. He’s at 15%. He’s on his way out. It’s an amazing fall from grace. it’s an amazing fall from grace to think what he was politically just two years ago to what he is now, it just shows how rough and tumble american politics can be, and why you should not close traffic lanes in Fort Lee.
The line is a reference to the famous viral Honey Badger YouTube video and likely reflects Stein’s time with the cool kids over at HuffPo.
