Six Cleveland Cops Fired Over 2012 Chase That Ended in Fatal 137-Shot Killings
The City of Cleveland has fired six police officers in connection with a 2012 car chase that ended with 137 shots being fired at two unarmed black people, killing them. The officer who was charged in the shooting was acquitted in criminal court, but Tuesday afternoon, a small measure of accountability was meted out. From Buzzfeed:
Six Cleveland police officers involved in the deadly November 2012 police chase and shooting that claimed the lives of two unarmed black residents were fired Tuesday, the city’s Safety Director Michael McGrath announced.
Michael Brelo, the officer who fired 49 of the more than 100 police bullets during the chaotic pursuit, was among those fired, Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Steve Loomis confirmed to Cleveland.com.
Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo was been acquitted of manslaughter after fatally shooting Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams. After reportedly mistaking the car backfiring with gunshots, officers fired a total of 137 shots, 49 coming from Brelo.
