According to South Carolina state law, Governor Haley has the authority to choose DeMint’s successor after he announced his resignation two weeks ago. Scott will be in place until 2014, when voters will then choose a replacement for DeMint’s last two slated years. Haley is expected to make a formal announcement today at noon.

The New York Times reports Haley’s appointment will make Scott the first black senator in South Carolina since the late 19th century.
