Stacey Dash Doubles Down on Controversial Oscar Comments: BET Lies to Black People
Actress and Fox News commentator Stacey Dash wrote a blog post Thursday accusing Black Entertainment Television of “throwing shade” at her ever since her commentary on the Oscar awards set off a flurry of controversy.
Dash’s incident began on Fox and Friends while talking about the discussions among actors boycotting the award ceremony for not having any black nominees. She said that the outrage over the event was a “ludicrous” form of self-segregation, and said that the much more productive step towards equality would be in calling to abolish the BET network and Black History Month from America.
While Dash’s comments created a firestorm of criticism, she’s sticking to her guns with a piece entitled “How BET Lies to Black People.” While she insisted she doesn’t have a problem with race and addressed her appearances on the network, she accused them of forcing their interpretations of segregation and racism onto other people. She wrote:
My problem goes back to the notion that every area of life needs to break down exactly according to demographic ratios except in those areas in which black people have decided they want to have their own space. I don’t have a problem with black people having their own space. I have a problem with the folks at BET absolutely freaking out when other institutions don’t match up to what they think is best.
Dash elaborated further to say that anything that does not conform to an institution’s “standards of diversity” is perceived as racially biased, and that BET head Stephen Hill was trying to fuel that fire.
“BET lies to American black people by telling them that the rest of America is racist, so stick close to your own kind,” Dash wrote. “Anything that promotes segregation is bad! And they’re absolutely mortified that someone like me – an independent-thinking black woman – dares call their bluff.”
