The Army National Guard Reveals They Were Hit with Data Breach

army national guardThe U.S. Army National Guard revealed today that they were targeted by a data breach that could affect both current and former members going back more than ten years.

An article on the Guard website explains that “files containing personal information was inadvertently transferred to a non-DoD-accredited data center by a contract employee.” In other words, this was not a hacking incident.

That being said, important information like home addresses and Social Security numbers of current and former Guardsmen are now vulnerable.

A Guard spokesman does clarify, “The issue was identified and promptly reported, and we do not believe the data will be used unlawfully… Nonetheless, the Guard believes that individuals potentially affected need to know about the breach and what actions they can take to protect themselves from potential identity theft.”
