Top Trump Advisor Only Found Out About Lewandowski Firing When Reporter Told Him
Buried in a recent Politico profile of senior Trump policy advisor Stephen Miller is this amusing tidbit: Miller only found out his boss and former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski had been fired when a reporter told him.
Originally, Lewandowski was blocking Miller from speaking with Politico’s Julia Ioffe about the profile, presumably in retaliation for Ioffe’s slightly unflattering profile of Melania Trump. But when Lewandowski was fired, Ioffe texted Miller to ask if the news would allow him to speak to her:
Within a minute my phone rang. It was Miller.
“What’s the news?” he asked.
I told him Lewandowski had just been let go. There was silence on the other end of the line.
“Interesting that you would be the one to tell me that,” he finally said, recovering the gravitas of his Serious Adult Voice. “Let me call you back. I have a lot to learn and discover in the next couple hours.”
Ioffe’s account corroborates reports at the time indicating that Trump staffers were completely blindsided by Lewindowski’s firing. One source described it as “bedlam in the Trump campaign. No one knows what is happening.”
