Trump Absolutely Ruins ‘Confused’ Jeff Sessions in Interview: ‘I Have No Attorney General’
— ABC News Politics (@ABCPolitics) September 19, 2018
President Trump gave an interview on Tuesday where he ended up going on a full-throttle tear against Jeff Sessions, declaring “I don’t have an Attorney General.”
Trump’s displeasure with Sessions over the latter’s recusal from the Russia election-meddling investigations has been a well-established fact for some time, though he seemed to up the intensity during a chat with Hill.TV. Trump expressed regret for making Sessions the head of the Justice Department while repeatedly bashing the AG over how he performed during his nomination hearings.
“And then he went through the nominating process and he did very poorly. I mean, he was mixed up and confused, and people that worked with him for, you know, a long time in the Senate were not nice to him, but he was giving very confusing answers. Answers that should have been easily answered. And that was a rough time for him.”
Trump’s anger with Sessions goes well beyond the Russia probe at this point. He has railed against the AG for not doing more to target his political enemies, and more recently, he bashed the DOJ for investigating two GOP congressmen for criminal charges, endangering their seats ahead of the midterm elections.
According to Bob Woodward, things between the two have gotten so bad that the president is restoring to personal insults and calling Sessions “mentally retarded” and a “dumb southerner.” Political observers continue to wonder whether Trump will fire Sessions at some point, and the president floated that possibility during the interview.
“We’ll see what happens. A lot of people have asked me to do that. And I guess I study history, and I say I just want to leave things alone, but it was very unfair what he did…And my worst enemies, I mean, people that, you know, are on the other side of me, in a lot of ways including politically, have said that was a very unfair thing he did. We’ll see how it goes with Jeff. I’m very disappointed in Jeff. Very disappointed.”
UPDATE – 10:00 a.m. ET: Trump bashed Sessions again while leaving the White House to go surveil the storm-ravaged areas of the Carolinas.
