Twitter Goes Full Demogorgon on Senate Dems After Lame Stranger Things Tweet
Democrats can always be counted on to use social media in the lamest ways imaginable. Remember this t-shirt, designed by the DNC? How about Hillary Clinton’s infamous student loan emoji tweet?
Well, the shame fairy has struck again. Senate Democrats have opened up their bag of groan-worthy memes and picked a play on the popular Netflix show Stranger Things.
For the uninitiated, the above image uses the fonts of the supernatural drama’s title screen and even alludes to the show’s hellish alternate dimension, the Upside Down.
“Coming This November.” Do you get it? It’s a reference to Republicans and their push for tax reform, which is currently underway. Pretty heady stuff. Mr. Clarke would be proud (yes, that was a sarcastic Stranger Things reference.)
It didn’t take long for people on Twitter to smell blood in the water. They wasted no time in mocking Senate Democrats, with many accusing party leaders of being incapable of framing policy positions in a way actual human beings could relate to.
oh god why

are you, like, incapable of phrasing a policy position in non-condescending language

Senate Democrats eventually conceded defeat to the onslaught of negative tweets, admitting that the original message was pretty darned stupid.
Alright, this meme is pretty bad.
Is it worse than tax hikes for the middle class that pay for tax giveaways for the 1%? No chance. https://t.co/r7OAAXh4Xl

To be fair and bi-partisan, Republicans too have also used social media platforms to utterly embarrass themselves. Remember this little gem? Paul Ryan totally thought this was gonna be a big hit with “the kids.” It wasn’t.
Here is a public service announcement for members of both parties. People may elect someone they want to have a beer with, but that doesn’t translate to social media. In other words, use the platforms to talk about policy, not to make dumb jokes. You’ll be surprised at how much our fragile little brains can handle.
