WaPo’s Richard Cohen: ‘Ferguson Has Become the Liberal Benghazi’
Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen has gotten people buzzing again about another provocative column of his. This time, Cohen is arguing that “Ferguson has become the liberal Benghazi.”
In his new column, he argues that just like how conservatives trumped up Benghazi as evidence of how White House “incompetence or timidity” led to the death of four Americans, liberals trumped up Ferguson as evidence of a racist police murder.
Cohen didn’t dismiss the findings of the DOJ report on racist police practices, but did scold people who jumped to conclusions in the killing of Michael Brown. He said, “If Brown was not criminally shot because he was black, then possibly the cop was accused because he was white. Who was the stereotyped individual here?”
Cohen makes it clear he doesn’t think racism isn’t a problem, but “distorting the facts can impede progress.”
Jon Stewart made a similar observation last week, only with the script flipped a bit. For one, he said there’s actually more to claims of racism in Ferguson than to claims of a Benghazi cover-up.
