WATCH: Cops Open Fire on Truck Speeding Toward Them During ICE Protests in Oakland

Police opened fire Thursday evening on a U-Haul truck that suddenly reversed toward officers outside a U.S. Coast Guard base in Alameda, California, after a day of protests against a planned immigration crackdown in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Video captured by KPIX photographer Rick Villaroman showed the truck suddenly backing toward a police line at the entrance of the base before officers unleashed a volley of bullets.

“He just hit the gas and sped towards them,” Villaroman told CBS News. “And that’s when they opened fire. About 20 to 30 rounds.”

The driver fled after the shooting, only to return minutes later, parking the bullet-riddled truck nearby before walking away, according to witnesses.

Villaroman said he saw no blood inside the vehicle. Several bystanders were reportedly struck, but police have not confirmed any injuries.

The Coast Guard facility, located on an artificial island between Oakland and Alameda, was slated to serve as a staging ground for a Border Patrol operation ordered by the Trump administration.

The move sparked protests that began early Thursday, drawing up to 200 demonstrators from across the Bay Area.
