Fighter Jet Crashes into Libyan Neighborhood (VIDEO)
A fighter jet crashed into an apartment complex in the Libyan city of Tobruk Tuesday, killing the pilot and a child and injuring scores more.
The plane belonged to the forces of Libyan general Khalifa Haftar, and was reportedly on a demonstration flight when witnesses reported it fell out of the sky, smoke pluming from an engine. Haftar’s people told Agence France-Presse the plane’s hydraulic system had malfunctioned.
However, theories quickly sprung up on social media that it had been shot done by Ansar al-Sharia, the Islamic militant group fighting Libya’s post-Qaddafi government. Another plane of Hafter’s crashed earlier this week, drawing similar suspicions.
