WATCH: President Trump Addresses the Nation on ‘Path Forward’ in Afghanistan War LIVE STREAM
President Donald Trump will give a speech tonight outlining America’s latest strategy on solving the Afghanistan War — the longest on-going conflict in U.S. history.
Per the White House press office:
President Donald J. Trump will address our Nation’s troops and the American people tomorrow night at 9:00 p.m. (EDT) from Fort Myer in Arlington, VA, to provide an update on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia.
This will be Trump’s first primetime policy address as President and will immediately be followed by House Speaker Paul Ryan‘s town hall on CNN.
While it is unclear what the President’s plans are going forward, Trump’s history of criticizing both the Afghanistan War specifically and America’s military involvement in general shows that he was once very clear in opposing the war — these tweets from 2013 show just that:
We have wasted an enormous amount of blood and treasure in Afghanistan. Their government has zero appreciation. Let’s get out!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 21, 2013
We should leave Afghanistan immediately. No more wasted lives. If we have to go back in, we go in hard & quick. Rebuild the US first.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 1, 2013
However, according to Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, the Trump Administration has finally crafted a clear future for U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and South Asia. Mattis added no details and simply stated, “[Trump] wants to be the one to announce it to the American people.”
