Ryan Ferguson was convicted for murder in 2005 and was to serve a 40-year sentence, but last week the Western District appeals court overturned his sentence, ruling he received an unfair trial. The trial became particularly well-known for Charles Erickson, Ferguson’s friend, testifying that he had dreams in which he and Ferguson had killed Columbia Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt in 2001.
Erickson, however, recanted that testimony last year, and tonight Ferguson was released from prison, after the appeals court ruled that prosecutors “withheld key evidence” during his trial. His family is expected to deliver a press conference tonight on the overturned conviction.
