WATCH: Syrian Arms Depot Explodes Into Massive Fireball After Rebel Attack
At least twenty-two people were killed and scores more wounded when a Syrian weapons depot exploded on Thursday, part of a larger rebel attack on regime-held areas.
Video of the blast shows several large, successive fireballs erupting from the depot, which is located in the central Syrian area Homs, an area controlled by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.
Rebels had targeted the area with rockets prior to the explosions, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British group that collects information from Syrian medics and activists, and government officials say at least ten rockets had been fired into surrounding buildings, including a sports stadium.
The strike occurred on the country’s Army Day, which al-Assad was marking with a visit to a former rebel compound outside of Damascus, his first venture outside of Damascus in over a year.
