Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was forced to contend with hecklers several times during his speech to a “Defund Obamacare” rally in Dallas Tuesday night. He mostly let his own supporters shout down the protesters with chants of “USA! USA!” but also accused the Obama administration’s Organizing for America group of sending the hecklers to the event.
“You have health care, so should we!” the men, seated near the stage, could be heard shouting towards to end of Cruz’s remarks.
“Thank you for sharing your views,” Cruz said before his supporters’ chants kicked in. “You know, part of the First Amendment is about respecting others.” After the protesters had been escorted from the venue, Cruz offered a few “observations” about them.
“Number one, I agree with them,” Cruz said. “They should have health care and Obamacare is causing more and more people struggling to climb the economic ladder to lose their health care.” He went on to suggest that the president’s “astroturf” (as opposed to “grassroots”) campaign had been responsible for sending the hecklers to the event.
“President Obama’s group Organizing for America is trying to pay people to pretend that the grassroots are with them,” Cruz said. “Every time they’ve come to protest in Texas, they’ve sent a small group of people, and you all have outnumbered them two, and three, and four to one.”
