‘We’re Hearing the Beginning of a Walkback’: CNN’s Jeff Zeleny on Trump’s Wiretap Claims

Following today’s White House press briefing where White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was relentlessly grilled on today’s Congressional deadline to the Department of Justice to provide evidence of President Donald Trump’s wiretap claims, CNN’s Jeff Zeleny stated that it appears the White House is preparing to backtrack on the explosive assertions.

After host Brooke Baldwin played a clip of Spicer’s responses today, which included him providing one explanation that Trump used “wiretap” in quotes in one tweet, Zeleny gave the following observation.

“I think we’re hearing the beginning of a walkback from this administration on that explosive tweet from the Saturday before last,” he told Baldwin. “We heard Sean Spicer say new things today, particularly that the president did not personally mean that president wiretapped.”

After recapping some of what Spicer said in the briefing, Zeleny reiterated his belief that the administration is laying the groundwork to take back the president’s comments.

“But to me, Brooke, it sounded like the beginning of a rationalization or a walkback,” he said.
