‘Gave Me Chills!’ Biden’s Classy Reaction to Trump Mocking Stutter Drew Media Raves — And Hit Harder Than Any Insult

The media raved about a video in which President Joe Biden encouraged a young kid named Harry to ignore people who mock stuttering, singling out former President Donald Trump — a classy reaction that hits harder than any insult.

Biden has long been open about his lifelong struggle with stuttering, and has been active in helping others who struggle with the disability. Trump — who has complained about Biden’s more aggressive taunts about losing the election — mocked Biden at a rally this weekend by doing a fake stuttering impression.

The president released a video this week in which he met with a kid named Harry in Milwaukee after the child had written to him about living with a stutter.

“I used to find it hard to talk on the telephone, or stand up in front of people and talk. These people would make fun of me. Like this President making fun,” Biden said, a reference to Trump.

On Friday afternoon’s edition of CNN’s Inside Politics, Bash played the video and delivered a stunned reaction:

DANA BASH: I mean, wow! Obviously he was referring for anybody he didn’t see. He was referring to Donald Trump, who in a speech recently made fun of Joe Biden.

GLORIA BORGER: And this happened during the last campaign as well, where he connected with a young person with a stutter. And by the way, he doesn’t just do this on camera. He does this a lot, and he still struggles with it, as we all know from watching him, particularly as the day gets later and later and it’s something he has to work with every speech he gives. He’s got to kind of map it out. And, now a lot of people don’t know he had it.

Correspondent Jeff Zeleny added that he also grew up with a stutter, and Biden’s compassion “brought chills to me.”

The anecdote that Borger related was from the 2020 campaign and took place in Keene, New Hampshire.

Biden also spoke at the 2016 National Institute for Stuttering annual gala.

Trump’s attack came on the heels of media attention to the Jugular Joe strategy, and seems to have been designed to get under Biden’s skin the way literally everything triggers Trump — but it backfired.
